Human milk is biologically specific for human babies. Simply put, this means that each species of mammal makes milk that is uniquely suited for its young. Cow’s milk is high in protein and minerals because baby calves are up and running within hours after birth – rapid muscle and bone growth is necessary for their survival. In contrast, the human survival organ is the brain. Human milk is high in factors that promote brain growth. This means that children who were breastfed tend to score higher on IQ (Intelligence Quotient) tests, due to the beneficial effects of human milk on neurodevelopment.
Human milk contains enzymes, hormones and immunoglobin that simply can’t be duplicated in formula, although formula manufacturers keep trying. They advertise that their brand is “most like mother’s milk” but even they agree that breast milk is the best. Look on the can formula – it says so right on the label. Since breast milk is always raw and fresh, you don’t lose any of the nutrients that are destroyed in formula processing.

The government claims that legislation an abortion and the newly launched safe delivery and free health services program have helped reduce the combined maternal mortality and morbidity ratio. In 2006, it stood at 430 per 1000 live births, in 2009, ratio went down to 229 per 1000 live births, a significant improvement in maternal mortality rate in three years. The rate of progress makes it likely that Nepal will meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) of 134 per 1000 live births by 2015.
The government has launched the National free health service and free maternity health service program. According to new provision, the government funded health outlets across the country would provide necessary maternity service.s For instance, the government runs Aama safety program which will reimburse the transportation cost incurred by pregnant women during travel. These incentives have led to an increase in the number of pregnant women seeking health care services. But worryingly, many pregnant women continue to lose their lives even after reaching health facilities. According to the maternal mortality and morbidity study, 80 percent of the pregnancy related death in the health outlets are due to their late arrival and in critical conditions. The number of women dying during abortion has also doubled despite the legalization of abortion in the country in 2002 – as even the clinically trained health care providers do not possess required expertise. Moreover, many women seek abortion late into their pregnancy; which can be fatal if the pregnancy exceeds 12 weeks, the safe and legal limit for abortion.
As such many challenges lie on the path of providing women with quality maternity services. One such challenge is to ensure that enough health care providers such as doctors and nurses are available at rural health and sub-health posts.
