Bandwidth can be defined as the measurement of bit-rate of consumed amount of available data communication resources which is expressed in terms of bits per second (bit/s) or multiples of it (Kbit/s, Mbit/s, Gbit/s etc.). It is also termed as network bandwidth, digital bandwidth or data bandwidth.

In Windows Server 2003 family or Windows XP Professional operating system or above it, the system reserves certain amount of connection bandwidth. This limits the reservations of combined bandwidth by the programs running on the system. By default, QoS Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the total bandwidth of a connection. This can cause slower internet connection. Hence, it becomes necessary to override the default and change the setting of the limit of reservable bandwidth. For this, there are certain steps. These are quite easy steps which can be followed by even a 10 year old kid. Now, let’s start the tutorial for increasing the speed of your internet connection.

1. The first step for this is running a file called ‘gpedit.msc’ through ‘Run’. Now, for opening ‘Run’, you have to press ‘Windows Logo + R’. After that, type ‘gpedit.msc’ in the text area and click on ‘OK’.1

2. After this step, a new window will appear whose title will be ‘Local Group Policy Editor’. Here, you have to double click on ‘Computer Configuration’.2

3. Then you will be headed to the window showing a list of three folders. They are Software Settings, Windows Settings and Administrative Templates.3

4. Open ‘Administrative Templates’ and a window with a list of six different folders will be shown. They are Control Panel, Network, Printers, System, Windows Components and All Settings.4

5. Open ‘Network’, which will direct you to a window containing a list of many folders and a file. Here, you’ll have to find ‘QoS Packet Scheduler’ and open it.5

6. After opening ‘QoS Packet Scheduler’, you will have to double click on a file called ‘Limit reservable bandwidth’. Then a new window will appear which will contain the options like Not Configured, Enabled and Disabled. The option ‘Disabled’ will be ticked initally. So, you will have to tick ‘Enabled’. In ‘Options’ box, you can find ‘Bandwidth limit (%)’ whose value is initially 20. You will have to set it as 0. Then, click on ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’.678

Like this, you will surely be able to increase the speed of your internet connection to some extent.
