SLC Examination, also known as School Leaving Certificate Examination is considered as one of the fate deciding examinations of the students of Nepal. The level of this examination is similar to level of examination like Matriculation. SLC Examination is even known as the iron-gate of the students but in the present time, there are many debates which have risen against this saying.

This examination is appeared by the students for the completion of their secondary level schooling. It means that the students appear in the examination for the completion of Grade 10.

There have been many modifications made in the system of SLC Examination ever since its establishment. Recently, the Government of Nepal has decided to give out the results of SLC Examination with the help of grading system. For this, Office of the Controller of Examinations has already started homework.

According to the current structure, the students are rated on the basis of ‘Passed’ or ‘Failed’. The Office of the Controller of Examinations has realized that this system is not a proper way of rating the students because some students even get failed just by lack of 1 or 2 marks.

The Controller of Examinations, Vishnu Bahadur Dware said, “In order to study about the implementation of the grading system, we have selected two experts. They have been instructed to study about the problems to be faced while implementing grading system, the positive effects of grading system and the overall consequences.” He also added, “It can’t be exactly said whether this system will be implemented from this year or not. But since the Office of the Controller of Examinations has already started homework, this system will come into existence as soon as possible.”

Dware even  stated that the decision of implementation of grading system was taken after getting many complaints about the present non-practical system.

The committee which was formed 9 years ago had suggested to remove the traditional system and bring the grading system in practice. That committee had also advised to bring the system of providing certificate of the subjects in which the student has passed. It had also suggested, “For the subjects in which the student has failed, the provision of allowing him/her to appear a separate exam and provide him/her an opportunity to be passed.” “When a student scores 80 marks in English and passes in it but fails in Nepali by scoring 30 and his overall rating becomes ‘Failed’, then a student gets very badly frustrated. This brings out negative thoughts in the students. Hence, the traditional system should be changed.” says the coordinator of that committee, Kedar Bhakta Mathema.

After the introduction of grading system, the present system of rating student as ‘Passed’ or ‘Failed’ will be stopped. The grading system will categorize the student’s result in A+, A, B, C, D and E according to his/her performance. In Nepal, grading system has already been implemented by other Universities except Tribhuvan University. However, Tribhuvan University will be publishing the result of Masters level in grading system since it has started Semester system in Masters level.

The grading system and the percentage will be as follows:
>> 90% and above –>> A+ (Distinction) grade
>> 80-89% –>> A (Excellent) grade
>> 60 to 79% –>> B (Very good) grade
>> 40 to 59% –>> C (Good) grade
>> 25 to 39% –>> D (Weak) grades.
>> below 25% –>> E (Very weak) grade.

6. Keep communicating. Once you’ve found a great partner, established a good relationship and figured out your objectives, don’t forget to keep communicating. Maintain contact with frequent check-ins to talk through any problems. This will keep confidence levels high on both sides, and means you can deal with any unexpected issues or changes swiftly.
