Principle of Solid Waste Management
|Improper disposal of solid wastes leads to various environmental and health hazards. To minimize such solid wastes are to be properly managed at their sources. The management of solid waste has become very difficult in urban areas as compared to rural areas. Management of solid waste refers to the planned and effective control of production, storage, transportation, processing and disposal or|
utilization of solid wastes produced from different sources. To manage the solid wastes in an effective way, 5-R principle is found very useful.
1. Reduction of wastes
As our activities are the causes of production of solid waste, we only are responsible to manage the solid waste. We have to focus ourselves on minimizing the production of solid wastes such that it becomes easy to manage these wastes. Amount of waste can be minimized by separating them under bio-degradable and non-biodegrable waste such that compost can be prepared from degradable wastes and non-biodegradable waste can be used in different way.
The process of utilizing the goods (articles) made from plastic or metal in the same form unless or until they are unfit for further use is known as re-use. Do not throw away the soft drink cans or the bottles; cover them with homemade paper or paint on them and use them as pencil stands or small vases. Alternately, you can store them and sell it to the kawadiwalla who takes these for recycling. Reuse the plastic bags for shopping again and again. For example use of coca cola bottles and water jars now and again.
The process of transforming materials into secondary resources for manufacturing new products is called recycling. Segregate your wastes so that non-perishable wastes are easily collected and taken for recycling. Dig a small pit to compost your organic wastes like kitchen wastes at your home. It reduces the waste as well as it reduces the production of new materials.
Instead of buying new containers from the market, use the ones that are in the house. Refuse to buy new items though you may think they are prettier than the ones you already have. Refuse more packaging so you reduce the waste.
The process of repairing the articles made of metal or plastics can also help to manage solid wastes to some extent. Repair old and damage clothes, wooden materials and so on. Repair damaged shoes, jackets, bags, baskets and so on as to reduce use of more new products which again ends up as waste.
